Was excited as all get out on the bus to my Melbourne motel, it finally hit me what I was about to do! Arrived in Seoul 11 exhausted hours later to another hour on the bus to get to the Ramada Hotel - very nice!! Cant say the same about the cold hamburger and chips that were there for dinner on arrival. This may surprise some people, but I wasn't too happy about that and let them know, so about an hour later KFC was delivered to my room. I only ate the bits that were shapes I recognised eg wings and drumsticks!
25 hours, 3 planes, 2 bus rides and one mad taxi ride later = one massive dose of jet lag - who cares - ciao Roma!! Then I woke up yesterday with a massive hangover without the benefit of the drinks, being hilariously funny, the best singer in the world and dancing better than anyone on dancing with the stars! I woke too late for breakfast in the breakfast room so I ordered breakfast to my room in pidgeon Italian - it worked because about 10 minutes later, there's a gawjarse Italian stallion standing at my door with a tray of deliciousness and the best coffee I have ever had!
Then I hit the streets, was going to stay close to my hotel and familiarise myself with the neighbourhood - HA! I walked and walked and walked for hours, got lost a gazillion times, walked around a corner and there's the Trevi Fountain, kept walking, getting lost again, around a corner, there's the Pantheon, kept waling, getting lost again, around a corner, there's the Spanish Steps - you get the picture! I eventually got sick of walking and getting lost and knowing I was close to my hotel I got a taxi back, to be told by my taxi driver how bellisimo I am, did I think he looks like Bruce Willis? (he did) and would I let him show me around Roma?, he will take me to many beautiful places! Yeah, I bet you would Bruce WIllis look alike!
Last night went for a 'bere' with a guy I have been internet friends with for a while we had a yummy 'vino rosso' (red wine) with some delicious sun dried 'pomodoro' (tomatoes) and 'pane' (bread). Then, he took me around Roma again - totally different at night! I had to pinch myself literally when I was standing looking at the coloseum with a full moon lighting up the ruins all around us. This place and its history is absolutely mindblowing and gobsmacking!
I was surprised/astounded/saddened by the amount of homeless people who sleep on the steets here. They pull up a piece of cardboard on footpaths and that's where they sleep. During the day, they it on the footpath begging. Yesterday I walked past one woman who was nursing a baby, last night a guy had 2 dogs with him, in total I saw 7 beggers yesterday standing on the street with a cup in their hand pleading for money.
l was also surprised by the amount of water that is wasted at the drinking fountains. There are fountains of all shapes and sizes everywhere, including small drinking fountains where the water constantly flows and goes down the drain and out to sea. When I commented on the waste of water to Marco mio Italiano amico last night land told him we would recycle the water somehow for public gardens etc, he thought that was a great idea!
Lots of graffiti around too, when I commented on that and told Marco that people doing community service clean up our graffiti he thought that was an amazing idea!
Then when he explained the difference between private and public beaches and I told him that I thought private beaches was a government rort, he could not see it as that, he thought it was quite ok, nothing wrong with it. I can!!
Today I am going to try and find a phone or a sim card - noone knew where I could get one yesterday so I'm going to try the main termini and see if I can find one there. Then I may wander around that side of the city for a while and come home and have a siesta before I go out for 'cena' (dinner) with Marco somewhere Romanly favoloso!
