I got to the cemetary island today, it took ages to get there because the ferry I had to catch stopped at every single stop on the way. Lucky I couldn't give a rats and have all the time in the world. Got there, and a boat pulled up at the same time with a coffin - I snuck a photo then walked around for a while, checked out the huge mausoleums some families have and the itty bitty bits of stone that the poor people like me have.
I came back on the ferry and a chick with a pair of torn jeans, piercings in her nose and lip and a top that I was admiring suddenly pulls out this little machine and starts asking people for their tickets. She was the most unsuspecting ticket inspector!
The ferry came back a different way so I saw some places I didn't know existed and will have a look on my map where there are and go for a wander.
I have spent the afternoon wandering, I followed a beggar for a while, I think it was either a boy or a very ugly girl dressed in a jumper and skirt, but had a bag stuffed full of clothes, which is what they do, so if they get caught stealing they get changed so the description people give the cops is wrong. She didn't get any money while she was hunched over at the end of one of the bridges so she gave that up and started walking around asking people for money, saw one man give her some change.
While I was wandering I found one of the tops that I have been wanting for five euro cheaper than everywhere else - bargain! Now I will just get the other one and then send this last parcel home. I think I might get the ferry to Lido, then tomorrow night I think I will do the murder and mystery tour, just about to ring and see what time and where it finishes so I am back at the nunnery in time for lock-out!
I sat this afternoon and watched some gondoliers. Now I don't know what happened to the spunks that were gondoliers last time I was here, but they definitely weren't the ones I was watching then, I think they may have been either their grandfathers or very old uncles and if I was paying them 120 euro an hour, they are not the gondoliers I'd be wanting!
I don't know how the people who live here stand all the tourists, this place is crawling with them during the day. When I went walking around this afternoon I avoided San Marco and walked the laneways a block back. They are almost empty compared to the front area. And the market stall people. How they can stand doing the same thing every single day then every night they pack up all their crap and store it somewhere to do it all again the next day. I couldn't stand it, but there are so many unsuspecting tourists they must make a fortune.
I'm not going out tonight, I went out last night, went to The Rialto bridge and kept walking, decided to go to the train station then get the vaporetto up the Grande Canale back to San Marco, but one small wrong turn can make such a difference, and in the dark everything looks so different, so I'm staying in tonight and tidy up this room so the nuns can get in and make my bed tomorrow morning!
