Had much better day today, walked through the Jewish ghetto and bought some brilliant (small) screen prints, went looking for and found the mask maker that showed me how to make masks last time (very pleased to notice he wasn't ugly) and pretended I didn't know him, somehow found myself in the artisan area of Caravaggio and bought some fabulous hand-made masks by a signora who welcomed me to watch her create her art work, walked along San Marco and didn't lose it once with the hordes of people and since realising I am not an ambassador for Australia while I am here I have been rude back to people and didn't get struck by lightning, (although there's going to be another storm tonight so I had better be careful) spoken Italian most of the day and actually been understood.
While walking along SanMarco there are artists everywhere, I bought a watercolour of SanGiorgo, he showed me exactly where the painting was done from, I took a photo of him, then took a photo of the spot. Love the painting. And I'm thinking that while I'm in SanMarco another time I am going to buy another of his paintings.
I also think I'm going to have to send some more stuff home. Another trip to la posta and bugger it!!
While walking around, I started busting to go to the toilet. There are signs everywhere for WC but, millions of people in Venezia a day, and I bet those dunnies aren't cleaned too often, so, being on the right side of the islands I made my way to the stazione.
To use the dunny at the stazione you have to pay 1 euro. Which, I happily did twice today. Because that 1 euro that I, and a million other busting chicks pay a day, employs a man who cleans those dunnies all day, every day. Bingo Bango, 1 euro later, clean dunny!
No matter where I am in Venezia I can either make it back to my room to go to the toilet or make it to the stazione. Third world problem solved.
Found the laundromat this morning but decided bugger it I will just hand wash, I couldn't be stuffed figuring out how to use the machines and I would have to buy laundry soap etc that I don't want, so stuff is just going to keep getting hand washed! Body heat works out the creases.
Think I will go to Murano Island tomorrow, not sure if it is an all day thing but will see, might get the ferry over there, check out the glass factory etc, have some lunch and ferry back.
At the suggestion of a friend, after my 'not so good' day yesterday, I'm also thinking of doing a night tour of the murders and mysteries of Venice. It starts at 8 so have to find out what time it finishes because the nunnery is locked up at 10.30 and I don't want to get locked out after a murders and mysteries tour! I'd like to thank him for the suggestion.
I've just had dinner in a restaurant around the corner from the nunnery, spaghetti with pomodori - all fresh and very yum. Except there is a crowd in a room out the back and a saxaphone player who are driving me nuts so it's one more drink for me then I'm off. I'll go back to the nunnery via San Marco. There are hundreds of people around at night so I'm glad my nunnery room is at the back of the building ALTHOUGH last night I could hear the man in the room next door coughing. I did say quite loudly that perhaps he needs to go to the farmacy and get something for that cough! Fingers crossed he a) heard me and b) went to the farmacy!
See what tomorrow brings ...
