Rome Day 5

21 December 2017

So I will start with yesterday ...

I came downstairs for my seven euro breakfast - tick.

With no major plans I decided to get the bus to termini and walk to san Lorenzo district.  It is described as young, hip, modern and artsy (a bit like myself) - tick.

Got to San Lorenzo and was nearly gagging - it is a filthy and disgusting area.  The university is in that area then you turn the corner and there is graffiti everywhere and shit everywhere, literally shit, either dog shit or human shit or both - no tick.

The University where lots of big Italian words would be used

Student parking

I couldn't walk fast enough to get back to the bus and back to Monti area (where I'm staying).  I was going to get the bus to Camp di Fiori mercato but got off early and decided to go back to the Trevi Fountain and to the Pantheon.   So glad I did, there was hardly anyone at the Trevi, I got up close and personal and even put my hand in the water.  Then I walked to the Pantheon - again, hardly anyone around - tick.
I just love the Fontana di Trevi

Then I walked around until I found a small restaurant, went in, ordered my lunch and the waiter came and put a basket of breads on my table.  I said 'no pane per favore' (no bread please) because, they leave the basket of bread on the table without asking if you want it and make out it is free.  Come the bill there will be bread listed and it's usually around 4 or 5 euro which is around 6 or 7 dollars.  I ate my delish lunch of vegetable ravioli with tomato sauce then ordered tiramisu which was delicious then I got the bill and on the bill - guess what - pane 4 euro.  I just looked at the guy and said I did not have bread.  Oh so sorry Madam!  Yeah1 good try.  The bill was all in Italian so if you didn't know Italian you would just pay it.  They are such ripper offerers!  And they don't even look embarrassed when you catch them out.  They think they can con you (me) like the waiter with the frozen tiramisu ...

I left there and it was starting to get chilly(ier) so decided to come back to my room - it was around 4pm and I had nothing planned so thought I could come back and have a cuppa and relax - no tick.

I was in my room for about an hour and thought the heater wasn't too heating so rang reception - and then it began all over again!

My heater isn't working properly.
I will send up the porter ...

He holds his hand up to the heater and looks at me as if to say 'what are you talking about, it is warm' so I looked at him as if to say 'you know very well it's not working'.

After all these looks, I said 'it is not working'
No madam it is not, I will speak to my colleague.

The phone rings, it is reception.  It appears your heater is faulty, we will change rooms.

OHHHHHHHHHH no we won't!  This is my third room and it is quiet and I will not be moving again.  I need the heater fixed or get me a portable one that I can have in my room.

Anyway, long long long story short, around 9pm they decided that yes, the heater is not working and no, they don't have a portable one for my room but I can move to a room on the third floor.

By this time I have almost had enough.  I said to him I started in a room on the third floor and had absolutely NO SLEEP.  This is my third room, it is quiet and I can sleep, so I will not be moving.  I don't think I should be expected to pay the full price either.

No madam.  I have made a note for my manager and he will be here at 9am tomorrow morning and he will address this.

Ok, I am going to bed now because I am not well (I was ok, just tired and sick of it and getting a headache).  I expect the heating to be fixed tomorrow or a portable heater for my room.

Yes Madam.

I slept like a log. Thanks to my hot water bottle that I now know why I put into my bag, my bedsocks and the two extra blankets on the bed.

I've just had breakfast this morning, and am about to go and speak to the manager.  I have two more nights at this place...
