I have walked five thousand million miles today! I am almost cripple like the gumbies that were in the street today for the Italian Special Olympics team. I actually worked out that I have walked about 18 kms today.
I walked and walked and walked along the river because I wanted to get back to see all the ruins etc so I just kept walking and walking and it was hot, and I am positive I am sunburnt - haven't looked yet - and there were millions of people everywhere of course. They now have stopped cars from using the main road outside the colosseum which is good but bikes are still allowed to use it so I nearly got run over a few times by bikes. After being in Venice it's hard to get used to roads etc again, although Rome soon wakes you up. Anyway, I walked around for an hour or so, then started on my way back. I walked through Trastevere and there was a little beer/bar/cafe so I stopped because I was busting and grabbed the only table there was. Next to my table was a woman sitting on her own having a beer and eating hot chips and they looked delish so I ordered some of those. Next thing, her pizza arrives and shes ooohhhh and aaahhhhh but managed to eat the lot! We got chatting and she was asking all about Australia etc. They are quite taken with Australia. They think it's lovely and green with kangaroos everywhere.
After an hour or so of chatting to her I left and walked through Trastevere, there were hundreds of people everywhere at every cafe, restaurant and eating place every single table was taken.
It took me about an hour then I arrived back at the Pope's house, wandered around and came back to my room, downloaded my photo and recharged my camera. For the first time ever my camera went flat while I was out and about!
I have discovered where to get the bus to go to the station, it is a few blocks away but at least I know where to get it that's a help. I am going to go to the station information office, I can't find one anywhere for the city of Rome, around here they are all just for the vatican, but I know there is one at the station, so I will go there because I want to find out about a couple of tours. I have emailed a couple but they only do private tours for a few hundred euro. Ahhhhh no thanks! I'm hopeful I can get tours, if not I will be able to work it out myself if I have to. Then I will probably get the train to Naples for the day. Just have a wander around the main street, go to the waterfront if I can find it and come back again. Everyone keeps telling me the waterfront is lovely so I might as well go and have a look. Everyone also tells me that I need to be careful about going to Naples because fo the petty crime, so I am going to leave my passport in the safe here and just take a little bit of money with me and no cards, just in case.
My room at this B & B is lovely, it's big and clean. A little noisy last night but I think that was because it was Saturday night and St Francis' day. Fingers crossed for a quieter night tonight, althought the cars zooming past right now aren't living up to my hopes of a quieter night! Shoosh!!
