Bella Roma 041014

I've started this at 10am at the Perugia station, I have an hour until the train to Roma but just wanted to be out of the B & B and on my way.
Frenchy and her daughter were at the breakfast table this morning, there are two chicks that 'run' the B&B.  One I think is the owner, Paola, and another on whose name I didn't get, she is a student I heard her tell Frenchy, she also works there, she was there more than Paola.  For this purpose I will call her 'the student'. I told the student yesterday morning that I hadn't been left any towels and that I had taken them from the empty room.  She kept apologising but it didn't matter, at least I had towels.  Every towel in that place S T I N K S like they were left in the washing machine to dry, didnt quite dry, were put away not quite dry and they all S T I N K mouldy and musty.  I couldn't use them and I ended up using the sheet to dry myself!
Caught the minimetro down here to the train station and as I was walking along the platform to come in to the station and find out which platform the train leaves from, I passed two women sitting on one of the seats on the platform.  As I passed the I saw they had coffee.  THEN I saw the glasses of wine.  Bloody civilised people the Italian.  Coffee and wine at 10am in the sunshine on the train station platform.  I walked past them and said "Buon giorno signore!!" With a smile, and they both gave me a huge grin and a double buon giorno.  Maybe they all need to start the day with coffee and wine.
Ok, I'm going to grab coffee (not wine) and sit in the waiting area for the train.  Lots of Aussies in this room I think - I'm eavesdropping and in a minute I will ask one to mind my bags while I go get my coffee.

Well have arrived in Rome, walked a gazzilion miles to the end of the platform (scrubber regional trains, they are like the melbourne metro trains) then caught the bus where there was a woman who was nuts and she was sitting there singing her heart out  - at least she was happy!  Then I got off near vatican city and walked.  Past my B&B, then back again on the other side of the road, then crossed the road, then rang the woman and I was standing out the front of the building after all.  Why the FRICKEN hell these places dont have numbers and signs is beyond me!  Then she pointed on the wall the name of the B&B.  OK then, now I see it.  Anyway, she is lovely.  And my room is lovely.  And it's two blocks from vatican city and the Pope and she doesnt speak any english  so that's good for my Italian.
I signed in, she left after organising my breakfast to my room at 9am, she sorted what I wanted, then I dumped my crap and went out and got my bearings.  There were cops and people everywhere so of course I followed and asked a girl what was going on.  It's St.Francis of Assisi (patron saint of Italy - like Australian day(ish)) and there's a big knees up at vatican city tonight.  So I wandered around for a while then went and sat at a cafe and was listening to the women on the table next to me (Americans, but not painful like in Venice) and we all got chatting, we sat there for two hours then I decided I'd had enough and went walking towards Vatican City and decided I would go in.  Your bags have to go through a security thingy like at the airport.  Mine got stopped.  Caribineri telling me to open my bag, so I passed my bag to them, No!!! You must open!!!  So I opened it, closed it, then went in with all the other millions of people.  Stood around for a while, then Papa turns up.  Crowd goes wild. He does the whole 'father son and holy ghost' bit, sits down and some other guy takes over so that was my cue.  I was BUSTING, so walked back to my B&B and that's where I am now, about to do some washing, have a nice hot shower and hopefully sleep for about 10 hours
I will saunter around the place, find out where the bus is for the station, go to the station, figure out the train for - I think Naples first.  Then see how I go.
I have a week here in Rome, I hope it doesn't go too fast
