Firenze - you've surprised me! 6 Settembre
I was happy to leave the nunnery in Roma this morning. I didn't even say goodbye. The woman who manages the place wasn't very friendly towards me, I got the feeling she is used to running a tight ship and she didn't like me telling her that I wasn't paying the extra that she wanted me to pay, that I was only paying what I had been quoted when I booked. Doesn't matter, I won't be going back.
I caught the bus to Termini, then hung around watching nuns checking train times - I still can't get used to nuns just being around the streets, on the buses etc. I think sometimes I stare, even though I try really hard not to!
The train to Firenze was one of the fast trains and it took 1.5 hours. although it didnt feel any faster really than the Geelong to Melbourne train. Lots of tunnels that made my ears pop!
Found this nunnery quite easily - just across from the station. The nuns here are just lovely and friendly and welcoming and wander around the place with a big smile on their faces and are always up for a chat. I confused two older ones though because they didnt speak any English and couldn't understand my Italian. Phew when the younger ones came back so I could pay etc. All sorted.
I went for a wander around Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo even though I wasnt particularly fussed, found a nice little place for bruschetta and insalata mista for lunch, then off I went. And even though I wasn't particularly fussed, the Duomo took my breath away. It just sneaks up on you. Once I figure out how to add photos on this tablet I have some good ones to include here.
Then I found the bus terminal where I wanted to find out the times for the buses to Voltera, SanGimignano and Montepulciano but the stupid info office at the bus terminal closed at 12.30 today and isnt open until Monday morning. I have no idea of what day it is so have no idea when things are open! Doesnt matter because then I planned to have a bit of a rest day, get some washing done and just have a wander UNTIL I went for a walk before and found the most fabulous market stalls AND Firenze Centro Mercarto - guess what I'm doing tomorrow!!! Of course it helped a bit when a couple of the market stall holder guys did a bit of a swoon, boosts the ego after Rome, although Marco did his best, his best just isn't good enough!
There is a supermercato across the strata from here which is also handy, they have prepackaged salads etc and I asked at the deli for some sundried pomodori and pane, got exactly what I asked for without the drama that I have been experiencing in Roma.
Maybe I am warming a bit to Firenze - something I hadn't expected!
